Captain Donald’s decision not to call up for Team Europe the player who had triumphed in the Italian Open, right at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, not even five months earlier, was certainly the most discussed.
Meronk, results
But the fact that the boys in Blue & Gold brought home the Cup that the Americans had regained at Whistling Straits, where Luke Donald’s picks (Sepp Straka, Ludvig Aberg, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Nicolai Hojgaard and Justin Rose, Editor’s note) did themselves proud on the fairways and greens of Guidonia Montecelio, has caused the story to fall into oblivion.
What is certain, however, is the fact that Adrian Meronk has not forgotten him.
The news of the non-call, received while returning from the European Open, had a preponderant weight in the decision taken by the Polish player to sign with LIV Golf, where he plays in Team Cleeks GC led by Martin Kaymer.
Regardless of the “revenge” reasons, it can be safely said that Meronk’s choice turned out to be a good one.
In the opening match of the 2025 season, played in Riyadh, he became the first Polish player to win on LIV Golf (he also holds the same record on the DP World Tour, Ed.) beating Jon Rahm by two shots, who won the team title with his Legion XIII.
After the victory, during the usual interviews, Meronk declared that qualifying for the Ryder Cup in Bethpage was no longer his main goal.
A statement made on the fly with a little too much adrenaline in his body?
No, because the Polish boy born in Hamburg reiterated the concept just yesterday.
Meronk is playing, along with several other LIV players, the International Series Macau presented by Winn, a tournament on the Asian Tour calendar.
At the end of the second round (he made the cut), speaking to reporters, he said:
“Luke Donald sent me a message after my win in Riyadh, which was ‘Keep playing well’ ”
“Obviously, if I’m playing well, I’ll be available and I’ll want to play (at Ryder, Ed.)”
“But that’s not my main goal. I think the point is to play well and see what happens”
“I feel like my game is progressing well, but I just need to be patient and work hard, and see what happens.”
