Miami: David Goffin tops pale Carlos Alcaraz

David Goffin will compete in the third round of the Miami Masters. The Belgian defeated world no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 17 minutes in the second round, earning a notable win and sending the former champion packing!

The 34-year-old lost a tight opener before outplaying the favorite, delivering three breaks in sets two and three and earning his second straight victory over Alcaraz. Carlos leaves the USA without collecting the desired results.

The Spaniard lost the Indian Wells crown to Jack Draper and hit the exit door in Miami much earlier than expected. The four-time Major winner will return home and start his preparations for the clay swing.

Goffin clinched three points more than Alcaraz in a tight contest. The veteran played a bit better behind the first serve and overpowered the 2022 champion in the pivotal moments. David defended three of five break points and provided four breaks to emerge at the top.

The Belgian tamed his strokes nicely and finished the duel with 23 winners and 25 unforced errors. Carlos attacked more, but his efforts were in vain following a 36-43 ratio. The young gun sprayed too many mistakes from his forehand, which cost him dearly.

Goffin hit six service winners less than his rival. However, he erased that deficit from the baseline and at the net. Alcaraz claimed seven points more in the shortest and most advanced rallies. However, he lost the ground in the mid-range ones between five to eight shots.

The Belgian denied two break points in the fourth game of the opening set and remained on the positive side. The 21-year-old hit a costly double fault in the seventh game to experience a break and fall 4-3 behind. Carlos responded in the next one.

He drew David’s mistake to pull the break back and lock the result at 4-4. The Spaniard attacked on the return at 6-5 and landed a volley winner for three set points. He welcomed Goffin’s wayward backhand on the second, claiming the opener 7-5 in 49 minutes.

Alcaraz survived deuces in the third game of the second set and reached a deuce on the return at 4-3. However, David kept his composure and brought the game home for 4-4. The 34-year-old stepped in on the return in game nine.

He landed a volley winner at the net for a break at 15 and a 5-4 lead. Goffin served for the set in game ten and fired a service winner, taking it 6-4 and introducing a decider after an hour and 35 minutes.

The Belgian gained a boost and drew the rival’s mistake at the beginning of the final set for an early break. Carlos received a time violation ahead of the third game and denied a break point to stay in touch. However, David served well and forged a 5-3 advantage.

The veteran stepped in on the return in the ninth game. He converted the second match point with a fine attack and a forced error, celebrating a notable victory and sending the 2nd seed packing.
