Mirra Andreeva makes surprise revelation about who was first WTA star to message her

Mirra Andreeva reveals the first player to message and support her on the WTA Tour was Bianca Andreescu, who reached out to her two years ago during her debut tournament on the main level.

In 2023 April, a 15-year-old Andreeva won back-to-back ITF titles before receiving a main draw wildcard for the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, where she won her opening three matches in her first WTA tournament before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the round-of-16.

Even before her Madrid performance, the Russian was widely regarded as one of the most talented players from her generation and viewed as someone who could do big things in the future. And during her run at Caja Magica – which included notable wins over Leylah Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette – the teenager received a message from 2019 US Open champion Andreescu.

Andreeva: Andreescu was the first and only female player to text me in Madrid

“After – I think even during the tournament – I got a message from Bianca Andreescu.  She was actually the first one and I think she was the only female tennis player that texted me,” the 17-year-old revealed in Miami.

“She said that if I need any advice or, I don’t know, any support, I can always reach out to her and we can have a chat or a call or whatever. She was super nice about it and she also texted me after I won the tournament, she told me some nice words.”

Two years later, the Russian is a two-time WTA 1000 champion and the world No. 6 just 40 days before her 18th birthday.

While some probably weren’t expecting to hear Andreescu being the first player to message Andreeva, it makes sense in some ways considering that the Canadian was also once considerd one of the most talented and promising players in the game. In 2019, the Canadian – who is now 24 years old – won two WTA 1000 titles and a Grand Slam trophy.
