Monte Carlo: Holger Rune retires against Nuno Borges

Indian Wells final remains Holger Rune’s only good result in 2025. The Dane suffered an early Monte Carlo defeat to Nuno Borges, trailing 6-2, 3-0 before retiring due to illness. Thus, Holger stands on a mediocre 11-9 score this season and loses 190 ATP points following an early loss.

The second part of the opening set saw four consecutive games with a break point. Borges claimed them, outplaying world no. 12 in the pivotal moments and gathering a boost. Rune dropped seven straight games before retiring and ending his campaign.

Borges forged a 15-6 advantage in service winners in those 11 games and dominated the baseline 25-16. Holger painted a backhand down the line winner in the fifth game of the duel for a break chance. Nuno denied it with a service winner and held for 3-2. 

Rune hit a double fault in the sixth game and offered his rival a break chance. He netted a backhand and feel 4-2 behind. The Portuguese denied a break point in game seven with a smash winner and held for a 5-2 advantage.

Borges drew the rival’s mistake in the eighth game and generated a set point. World no. 12 placed a forehand wide, dropping the opener 6-2 in 31 minutes. Holger talked to the doctors ahead of the second set and continued the match. 

Nuno clinched the first game with a service winner and grabbed a break in the second game when Holger sent a forehand long. Borges landed an ace in the third game, rattling off seven games before his rival retired.
