The last part of Nick Kyrgios’ career is turning into a real nightmare. The Australian ace – who has practically missed the last two seasons due to injury – has tried to return to play at the highest level at the beginning of 2025, but the results and responses of his body have been disastrous so far.
His first tournament was the Brisbane International in January, where he seemed very far from an acceptable condition.
Despite feeling pain in his wrist and knee, the talent from Canberra had still decided to play the Australian Open to compete in front of his home fans.
His run at Melbourne Park had already ended at Melbourne Park and – during the subsequent press conference – he admitted that he would probably no longer play singles at AO.
Update on Kyrgios’ schedule
Despite undergoing surgery and working hard in recent months, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist still feels pain especially on his wrist and this was evident during his match against Botic van de Zandschulp in Indian Wells yesterday.
After losing the first set and going down a break in the second set, Nick had to retire leaving the court with tears in his eyes.
If he does not find an effective solution soon, Kyrgios’ career could really end in the worst possible way.
His next tournament would be the Miami Open in the second half of this month, but the feeling is that the Australian is betting everything on Wimbledon (the tournament where he reached the final in 2022 and in which he has the best chance of going far).
“The pain is not great but I’ll just keep moving forward trying to do the right thing. Obviously the time frame for Miami is not ideal,” Kyrgios explained during his press-conference.
“But that’s where I was scheduled to play so I’ll see how my wrist responds and if not Miami then I’ll keep looking forward. I can’t keep looking back and being disappointed” – he added.
