Nick Kyrgios says goodbye to the men’s singles competition for good

Nick Kyrgios, after his defeat in three sets in the 1st round of the Australian Open 2025 against the British Jacob Fearnley, has not had much luck in doubles either.

His partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he has already won this Slam in 2022, was not in the best physical condition – as was he himself – and gave up during the 2nd set, handing the victory to the other Australian doubles team formed by Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth. Thus ended the adventure of the former Wimbledon finalist in the 2025 edition of the Happy Slam.

The match was the occasion to make further statements to the media, before officially saying goodbye to Melbourne.

“I don’t know what this season will bring me. I’ve been out for two years, I think I hit the ball well and I’ll trust the process, but it’s clear that I’m very far from my pre-injury level.

Personally, I’m not interested in playing singles after this year, because everything that requires me to stay in the elite doesn’t even give me the guarantee and security of being able to play a week without physical problems. I enjoyed playing matches again on these courts, which mean a lot to me,” he said

In the future, Nick could focus exclusively on doubles: “It’s easier on the body, we could continue to form a great pair Kokkinakis and I, for years. We have no plans, honestly I can’t guarantee that I will compete on these courts again,” he admitted, concluding the press conference
