Nick Kyrgios sounds off on Jannik Sinner-WADA doping case settlement

Nick Kyrgios wasn’t impressed at all with Jannik Sinner settling with the WADA and avoiding going to the CAS in April.

In late September, the WADA lodged an appeal in the ITIA’s ruling that the Italian bore no responsibility for a failed doping test that was caused by the negligence of his former physio Giacomo Naldi.

Between April 16-17, the world No. 1 was set to be heard in Lausanne, with the WADA’s goal being to get him a suspension in the range of one to two years.

But this morning, the WADA announced that Sinner reached a settlement with them and that he accepted a three-month ban, which started on February 9th and will conclude on May 4th.

Kyrgios, who has been one of the harshest critics of the Italian’s doping case and often called on the 23-year-old to get “a proper sanction,” strongly reacted to the news.

Kyrgios: Fairness doesn’t exist in this sport… A sad day

“So WADA come out and say it would be a 1-2 year ban. Obviously Sinner’s team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a 3 month ban, no titles lost, no prize money lost. Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist,” the Australian wrote on X.

In a follow-up post, he added more: “So he was found guilty – hence the ban. But didn’t get stripped of anything and can play the French. Sad sad sad day.”

Meanwhile, the WADA said in their statement that they accepted that the Italian didn’t knowingly or intentionally take a banned substance.

However, they believe that every athlete is also responsible for the actions of their team and therefore felt some kind of a ban was warranted.
