Picture: Jannik Sinner trains with another Australian Open champion

Stan Wawrinka and Jannik Sinner claimed the Australian Open titles ten years apart. The Swiss conquered Melbourne in 2014, ousting Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal en route to his first Major title.

A decade later, Jannik Sinner lifted his first Major crown at the Australian Open, toppling Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev en route to tennis glory. Two champions trained at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

Jannik kicked off his Melbourne training sessions versus the 16-year-old Cruz Hewitt on Saturday. A day later, he hit with Wawrinka, the most experienced player in the draw. Stan is among the oldest active players on the ATP ranking list.

Born in 1985, the Swiss will enter his 19th Australian Open. He debuted 19 years ago and achieved notable results at the first Major of the season. Wawrinka’s last Australian Open quarter-final came in 2020, when he fell to Alexander Zverev in four sets.

Stan has not played well since, scoring only one victory in three campaigns and hoping for a better run in 2025. The veteran will seek victories, while Jannik Sinner dreams only about the title defense! World no.1 will lead the draw in Melbourne ahead of Alexander Zverev.

Sinner came to Melbourne a year ago as world no. 4 and one of the favorites following a strong run in the second part of 2023. The young Italian proved that on the court, reaching the semi-final and preparing for the ultimate battles.

Jannik faced the ten-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. The younger player made a furious start and toppled the legend in four sets, moving into his first Major final at 22. The Italian tamed his strokes nicely and kept the pressure on the other side.

Djokovic failed to create a break point and could not repeat that pace in his games, fending off a match point in the third set before falling in the fourth. Sinner faced the former Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev in the title clash.

The Russian outplayed the youngster in the opening two sets, moving closer to his first Australian Open trophy. However, Jannik performed an incredible comeback from the third set. He prevailed in a five-setter, lifting a trophy and becoming a Major winner at 22.

Sinner embraced a 73-6 score in 2024, lifting eight ATP trophies and leaving everyone behind. Although many players want to spoil his party and dethrone him, Jannik will be the favorite in Melbourne.
