Potapova triumphs in Cluj-Napoca amid personal struggles

World No. 32 Anastasia Potapova may be facing challenges off the court—having recently divorced her long-time partner Alexander Shevchenko after a short marriage—but she continues to shine in her professional career. This week, the 23-year-old captured her third WTA title at the 2025 Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Entering the WTA 250 event as the top seed, Potapova delivered a commanding performance. She marched through the draw with straight-set wins over Julia Grabher, Viktorija Golubic, Ella Seidel, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich before battling past unseeded Lucia Bronzetti in the final. After dropping the opening set, she stormed back to claim a 4-6 6-1 6-2 victory. The win extended her perfect record against the world No. 72 Bronzetti to 5-0.

While Potapova’s triumph was the highlight of the tournament, the event will also be remembered for the absolutely unexpected retirement of home star Simona Halep. The two-time Grand Slam champion bid farewell to the sport after a first-round loss to eventual finalist Bronzetti, marking the end of an era for Romanian tennis.

This latest title adds to Potapova’s growing resume. It is her third career WTA singles title and her second on indoor hard courts—with her previous hard-court title coming in Linz 2023. Her maiden WTA trophy was claimed on clay in Istanbul (2022). (photo: Jimmie48)
