PTPA files second lawsuit, alleges ATP confronted and ‘threatened’ players

The PTPA is reportedly seeking a court order against the ATP after learning about the action they allegedly took after the lawsuit was filed.

Earlier this week, the PTPA announced that they were taking the ATP to court over their “anti-competitive practices and a blatant disregard for player welfare.”

Now, Russell Fuller of BBC Sport is reporting that the PTPA was back in court on Friday. Apparently, the ATP reached out to players and wanted them to sign pre-prepared statements that stated they had no prior knowledge of the legal action that was taken against the association. Also, the ATP allegedly threatened players to reduce their prize money and then use those same funds for legal fees.

As a result, the PTPA went to the judge, seeking an order that would prevent the ATP, WTA, ITF and the ITIA from communicating with players about their involvement in the process.

The ATP ‘strongly rejected’ the claims in the lawsuit made against them

“We strongly reject the premise of the PTPA’s claims, believe the case to be entirely without merit, and will vigorously defend our position,” they said in a statement after the news dropped.

Meanwhile, Djokovic – who started the PTPA along with Vasek Pospisil in 2020 – said he agreed and disagreed with certain parts of the lawsuit.

“I’ve seen some changes, but there are some fundamental changes that are still yet to be made, and I really hope that all the governing bodies, including PTPA, will come together and solve these issues. This is a classic lawsuit, so lawyers-to-lawyers type of situation. So to be quite frank with you, there are things that I agree with in the lawsuit, and then there are also things that I don’t agree with,” Djokovic said.
