Reason why Novak Djokovic must continue to work with Andy Murray

Novak Djokovic’s run at the 2025 Australian Open ended in the semifinals. The former world number 1 tried in every way to recover from the adductor injury that had affected him in the previous round, but the miracle did not succeed this time and he had to retire at the end of the first set against Sascha Zverev.

It’s really a shame that Nole’s tournament is over right now and the Serbian legend certainly wouldn’t have deserved to receive those boos when he left the Rod Laver Arena. At almost 38 years old, the 24-time Grand Slam champion could not promise that he will play this tournament next year and that is why he deserved better treatment.

Murray helped Nole

Despite the atrocious ending, the 37-year-old from Belgrade can still extrapolate some positive signs from this edition of the Happy Slam. After a very problematic season, Nole returned to play excellent tennis also thanks to the support of Andy Murray who helped him a lot from a tactical and mental point of view.

The former Scottish champion took this work very seriously and its effect was seen on Novak, who embraced him at the end of the match against Alcaraz and admitted that their relationship is getting deeper and deeper.

It is not clear if their collaboration will continue in the coming months, but it would be a real shame if the epilogue were this. The 3-time Grand Slam champion gave a new impetus to the Serbian ace, giving him back those motivations he seemed to have lost last year.

“We are both disappointed with what just happened, so we didn’t talk about the future steps,” Djokovic said in his press conference.

“I’ll definitely have a chat with Andy and thank him for being here with me. You know, give him my feedback, which is, of course, positive, and see how he feels.

We are still hot-headed and disappointed, so it’s kind of hard to switch the page and start talking about what the next steps are” – he added.
