Riccardo Piatti opens up about his split with Jannik Sinner

The former coach Riccardo Piatti has not talked often about his partnership with Jannik Sinner, in recent years, but in the documentary Forza Jannik: Sinner and the Rise of Italian Tennis, produced by the official channel of the Australian Open, the historical former coach of the Italian opened up about his split from the current ATP No.1.

Piatti has been a very important figure in Jannik’s growth. The Italian coach was his coach from when the 2-time Slam champion was 13 until February 2022, when Sinner decided to change and rely on Simone Vagnozzi who was later joined by Darren Cahill.

The video obviously talks about Jannik’s career: not only about the historic victory at the 2024 Australian Open, the first Slam of his career, but also about his life and his moments of growth.

Among the many testimonies present in the documentary, Piatti’s stands out. When the current Australian Open and US Open champion announced in February 2022 his intention to change his technical guide, the news was received with great surprise given the role the coach had had in his growth path.

In the documentary he recalls that moment and also adds another non-obvious sentence: “The separation was difficult for me, that’s for sure. But I think Jannik made the right choice.

He came to me at 13. I had seen him in Milan in an under-12 tournament, I remembered him for his red hair but I didn’t know his name. As soon as I looked at him in training I thought: I want to adopt this boy. I asked his parents: Why do you want him to come to Bordighera?. The father replied: Because you want him.”

We recall Jannik will defend a Slam title for the first time in his career, in Melbourne. The Italian will know his fate about the Clostebol doping scandal only by the end of February / beginning of March, when CAS will give the final sentence about the matter, after WADA appeal.
