Richie Ramsay, a famous Scottish golfer, surprised many by appearing at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, wearing a hat that did not have the logo of his sponsors. Given that fans and the public were surprised by such an act, the 41-year-old explained his views. Namely, Ramsey believes that he is an independent golfer, who is not closely tied to his sponsors.
He stressed that he is open to new sponsorships, not having any obstacles to get there.
“I don’t have a hat deal,” Ramsay told The Scotsman.
“Would I like to have one? Yes, but it’s just the way the market is going. All the money is going to the top. You either need to be a top player or a young up-and-coming player. I get it. I understand it.”
The experienced golfer emphasizes that he is not a young golfer who is just building his place under the golf sky.
“I know my place. I am older. I’m not a young up-and-coming player. But I feel like I still serve a purpose with regards to that. Look, if someone wants to sponsor me, then great.”
Richie Ramsay on young talents
The player from Aberdeen did not excel last year, while 2022 can be marked as his best season. Last year, the well-known golfer finished 81st in the ranking list, unable to qualify for the final DP World Tour. Ramsey pointed out that last year was challenging for him, especially regarding the mental aspect of the game. The Scottish golfer said that he is in the phase of his career where promising guys are appearing who are getting better every year.
“At the end of last year, I struggled a bit mentally. I struggled with where I was at, I suppose. I wouldn’t say I was in no man’s land, but you are at that point in your career where all these guys are coming through who send it a country mile and the technology helps that.
You still want to compete and, you know me, I don’t like losing. To try and stick to my game, a win for me is something I want to chase, but it is increasingly harder relative to where we play and the way the game is.”
