Increasing emphasis is placed on golf as a global game. Looking at the PGA Tour and the history of this competition, it seems that the leaders of the most prestigious Tour did not succeed in this plan, nor did they ever think seriously or look at golf that way. However, the arrival of LIV and their different visions probably influenced PGA officials to start thinking about golf in such a way.
Well-known names in the golf scene, such as Rory McIlroy, have interesting views regarding the future. The golfer from North Norway spoke about golf before another tournament, believing that this sport should be a global game. Although Rory enjoys playing in the US, he feels this sport should be much more than that.
An experienced golfer advocate that this sport visit the soil of Australia and other countries, aware of its importance.
“I think there’s an opportunity for it to be worldwide,” McIlroy said, as quoted by Macon.
“Yeah, I feel like golf isn’t just played in America. It didn’t start in America. It’s played in a lot of other places in the world. I think there is an opportunity to have some of the bigger tournaments outside of America… I think we need bigger events in Australia. I think the Australian Open needs to be put up and sort of held to a higher — the Australian Open was always a very big tournament back in the day, and I think that could be one that could be elevated along with some others.”- he continued.
The future of the sport
LIV officials have often spoken (and still speak) about the game going global. Their arrival has changed a lot, and the Saudi-backed Tour’s ambitions are even greater in the future. They want to visit every important corner of the planet, promote their brand, and influence the popularity of the sport.
Whether PGA Tour officials will follow the same example is still unknown.
The trends will be closely monitored in the coming years, but it is clear that there is also a trend of globalization of sports in other sports, with the aim of achieving greater popularity and doing great promotion on the soil of interesting countries.
