Rory McIlroy, a popular golfer, discussed the growth of YouTube golf, as well as LIV Golf’s desire to hire some of the famous golf influencers. Rory McIlroy also responded to a question about whether the PGA Tour is losing power under the influence of YouTube golf.
“I think it already has been diminished,” McIlroy said, as quoted by Fresnobee.
“YouTube is like golf entertainment adjacent. Those guys are killing it. They found a niche, it’s really cool and it serves a purpose for a lot of people.”
Rory McIlroy prefers real golfers
However, as someone who has been playing golf for years, and as someone who is at the top, Rory McIlroy still gives preference to ‘real’ golfers who play real tournaments. The Northern Irishman has changed his views significantly in recent years, aware that fans of the sport, especially younger ones, want to see a different side of golf.
McIlroy has stressed many times how important the entertainment factor is in this sport, but the question is whether this can lead golf in the wrong direction.
“I would much rather sit down and watch real golfers play real tournaments. To me, that’s more entertaining. But I understand other people want something different, and that’s totally fine as well. I think there’s space for all of this.”- he said.
People are divided in everything, including their views on golf and innovations. On one side we have those (who seem to be the majority) who advocate traditional golf, opposing change. On the other side, we have those who believe that golf must follow other sports, trends and adapt to the new times.
The question is, is it possible to balance both views and sides?
