LIV Golf is a story that interests many golfers, but many refuse to become part of the controversial Tour, for many reasons. Although a large number of golfers ‘went to the other side’ with the creation of this competition, things are much different now.
Golfers are not so open to coming to the controversial Tour, considering it a wrong decision.
Rory McIlroy, probably the most popular golfer next to Woods at the moment, is happy that LIV Golf didn’t exist in his early 20s. Rory admits that he was never the profile of a golfer who ran after money.
“I’m so glad that LIV wasn’t around when I was that age,” McIlroy said.
“Because to me, all I want to do was get into the top 50 in the world, play the majors, like, try to become one of the best players in the world. I didn’t care how much money I had at that point, and I was just getting starts on the PGA Tour and the European tour and that was enough for me.”- he continued, as quoted by The Bellingham Herald.
Rory McIlroy’s advices
Tom McKibbin, a young Northern Irishman became part of LIV Golf a few weeks ago. Although he consulted with McIlroy, he decided to become part of the Saudi backed Tour. Rory McIlroy tried to advise him, give him useful information and try to convince him otherwise. Still, McKibbin had no qualms; LIV Golf is the right place for me!
“I think I’m close enough to what’s going on in the game that I could give him a good understanding of where everything might shake out in the next year or two,” McIlroy said.
“So, all I could really do is give him that information, and then at the end of the day he was always going to make his own his own choice and his own decision.”
Fans were particularly surprised by McIlroy’s statements, who admitted that if he were the same age as McKibbin, there would be a chance that he would make a different decision.
“If I were 21 years old or 22 in Tom’s position, maybe I would have made a different choice as well,” McIlroy said. “But thankfully, that choice wasn’t an option at that point. And again, I feel fortunate that it wasn’t.”
