Sergio Garcia: “Being Captain is incredible”

The echo of Luke Donald’s words in New York has not yet died down, and here is the person directly concerned, Sergio Garcia, expressing his thoughts, completing the overall picture.

In an interview with GolfMagic on the sidelines of FORE Kids ATX, a charity event in favor of the Sergio & Angela Garcia Foundation, now in its third edition, the Spanish player further clarified his position.

First of all, Garcia is convinced that he expects some form of facilitation to accompany his return to the DP World Tour (and, potentially, to Team Europe, Editor’s note).

Sergio Garcia, statements

“If the situation with the European Tour improves slightly, so that their requests and ours get closer, (my) decision is 99% made”

“If that doesn’t happen, things will get more difficult, but we hope that’s not the case”.

But Garcia’s greatest desire is to return to wear the blue & gold of Team Europe.

Sergio knows perfectly well that, given the impossibility of improving his position in the OWGR, he must focus everything on Captain Donald’s picks.

“If the choice were made now, I could say I have a good chance”

“But the road is still long, and so I just have to continue playing well, showing that I am in good shape”

“Everyone knows that I can give my contribution to the team, regardless of my game, and it is something I have shown in my 10 participations in the Ryder Cup”.

And it is at this point that, inevitably, there was talk of his possible role as Captain.

“To be honest, I haven’t thought about it too much specifically, but it’s something that has crossed my mind from time to time”

“I feel like my game is still good enough to play future Ryder Cups”

“If you start thinking about that (being a captain, ed.) it’s like giving up the chance to be a team player”

“Being a captain is incredible, I’m sure, but there’s nothing like being a Ryder Cup player”.
