Siniakova, Townsend secure Australian Open women’s doubles title

In a gripping final on Rod Laver Arena, top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend triumphed over Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-7(4) 6-3 to claim the women’s doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open. The victory marks another milestone for the Czech-American pairing, who overcame a spirited comeback by the No.3 seeds to clinch their second Grand Slam as a duo.

For Townsend, the match held special significance as it brought her back to the court where her professional journey began. “The last time I played on this court I was 15, and in 2012 I won the juniors here and that was the kick start,” Townsend said. “Honestly, being here is so special to me because this tournament was the beginning of me being able to live out my dream.”

Siniakova, who has now won her tenth Grand Slam women’s doubles title, reflected on their hard-fought victory. “I’m happy with the way that we fought mentally and were able to fight through those tough moments and kind of overcome,” the new Joma representative noted in the champions’ press conference.

Siniakova and Townsend started strong, racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set and closing it out 6-2. They appeared poised for a straight-sets win when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Hsieh and Ostapenko clawed back, forcing a tiebreak and claiming the second set.

The final set was a rollercoaster, with an early break against Siniakova followed by an immediate break back. At 5-3, the top seeds capitalized on Hsieh’s struggles with serve, and Siniakova served out the match with Townsend sealing the win at the net.

Since pairing eight months ago, Siniakova and Townsend have been a dominant force in women’s doubles. They claimed their first major together at Wimbledon in 2024, reached the US Open semifinals, and now hold a 15-1 record across three Grand Slams.
