Slam legend states Emma Raducanu can ‘become of best’ after beating seed at AO

Mats Wilander applauded Emma Raducanu for kicking off her Australian Open campaign with a 7-6 (4) 7-6 (2) over No. 26 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and stated that the Briton could become “one of the best in the world” if she avoids injury issues.

When the 22-year-old drew a seeded player in Melbourne, it was clear that it would be all but an easy opener.

And while Raducanu struggled with her serve and got broken six times, she also claimed six breaks – and most importantly – came up bigger in both tie-breaks.

Now, the current world No. 61 is set to meet Amanda Anisimova for the first time in her career.

“That’s a tough match, but this was a tough match as well,” former seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander told Eurosport.

“Alexandrova is a good player and you have to play well. I’m very impressed with Emma. Every time I see her, there is no question in my mind that she can become one of the best players in the world if she stays healthy long enough.

“Anisimova hits the ball very, very, very hard. It’s going to be a tough match, but I love seeing Emma back.”

Tim Henman defends Raducanu’s 15 double faults

Against Alexandrova, the 2021 US Open winner had nine aces but also 15 double faults and only won 30 percent of her second-serve points.

But this was the Briton’s first match of the season. Previously, she withdrew from Auckland due to a back injury.

And considering the circumstances, Henman suggests that the 22-year-old’s serving display shouldn’t be surprising.

“She had to pull out of Auckland because of that back spasm. If you’ve got a bad back, the last thing you want to do is serve so she might not have served that much coming into the event,” Henman said.
