South African Open, one of the oldest event

The South African Open is one of the oldest golf Opens in the world. From February 27 to March 2, the 114th edition of the South African Open will be held in Durban, which was played for the first time in 1903 when the Scotsman Laurie Waters won, who also won in 1904, 1907 and 1920. The penultimate stage of the International Swing will see three Italians competing: Gregorio De Leo, fresh from fifth place in the Kenya Open, Francesco Laporta and Andrea Pavan.

Dean Burmester will defend the title, having won at home in December 2023, in front of his fans, when Renato Paratore (absent this time) finished the competition in second place. Behind him, Manassero (busy on the PGA Tour in the Cognizant Classic on the same days), fifth, Laporta, tenth, and Pavan, seventeenth. At the end of the Joburg Open (March 6-9 in Johannesburg) the player who closes in first place in the special ranking regarding the eight events of the International Swing will gain access to all the “Back 9” events of the circuit, will receive a bonus of 200,000 dollars and an exemption for the Genesis Scottish (July 10-13). But there is more, because the South African will not “only” offer 1,500,000 dollars, of which 255,000 will go to the winner, but also three places (for those not already qualified) for The Open (July 17-20 in Northern Ireland), the oldest Major of the discipline. Hosting the competition for the 18th time will be the Durban Country Club founded in 1922. The record of 13 victories in the tournament belongs to Gary Player who signed the first feat in 1956 and the last, in 1981.

The rules of golf are relatively complicated compared to other sports because they are played outdoors, close to nature and animals. Respecting the rules is a basic element in the game of golf, which, almost always based on self-control and the free conscience of the players, often sees distorted results, sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously or through carelessness, due to the non-observance by many players of the rules of the game. In addition to the rules, golf adheres to a code of conduct, known as etiquette, which generally means playing the game with due respect for the golf course and other players. Etiquette is an essential component of this sport.
