Taylor Fritz makes huge revelation after his loss to Gael Monfils

A shocking elimination. Taylor Fritz was playing the best tennis of his career in recent months, in which he reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open and the final at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin entering the Top 5 of the ATP ranking with full merit.

The American ace hoped to reach at least the semifinals at the 2025 Australian Open, where another match against world number 1 Jannik Sinner probably awaited him. However – after easily passing the first two rounds at Melbourne Park – his run ended today against a deluxe version of Gael Monfils.

Fritz congratulates Monfils

The French veteran is playing really well in these first weeks of 2025 and his strategy has highlighted all of Fritz’s weaknesses at the moment. The current world number 4 was never in control of the match, not even after winning the first set, surrendering after a tough battle that rewarded the sharpest player from a tactical point of view.

“I think I played at a good level and I don’t have much to reproach myself for” – said Fritz at the end of the match, without hiding his sadness for a result below expectations. It’s no secret that the American had much higher ambitions for the first Major tournament of the new season.

“When you’re up against a rival who plays such impressive tennis as Gael did today, there’s not much you can do. I felt like I couldn’t put him in enough trouble with my shots and I knew right away that it wouldn’t be easy to beat him. I can’t believe he’s 38,” Taylor added.

After this untimely elimination, the 2024 US Open finalist will not have to lose his cool and will have to figure out with his team what areas of his game he can still improve. The season has just begun and Fritz has plenty of time to achieve even more prestigious results than last year.
