Toni Nadal tells Carlos Alcaraz he should consider ‘quitting tennis’ under one condition

Toni Nadal has asserted that Carlos Alcaraz should “quit tennis” if the sport “overwhelms him” in a strong message to the Spanish star.

Alcaraz opened up about his approach to his tennis career in the Netflix documentary series, Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, which was was released in April.

The four-time Grand Slam champion explained: “Right now my biggest fear of all is ending up seeing tennis as an obligation. Sometimes I feel like I am enslaved to tennis and that causes anxiety, frustration, doubts.”

Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, did not hold back in sharing his thoughts on Alcaraz’s candid statements, despite revealing he had not seen the documentary.

Speaking on the Nude Project podcast, Nadal said: “If it overwhelms him, then he should quit tennis. I understand things differently in life.

“In the end, in the world of sport there is a tendency to exaggerate everything. I’ve heard people talk many times about the sacrifice of sport, the sacrifice that the Real Madrid athletes made, and I used to say: ‘Sacrifice?’

“Life is a matter of sacrifice, not just doing what I want. Sometimes it’s worth it for people and sometimes it’s not. If it’s not worth it, it’s better to change jobs.

John McEnroe offers intriguing take as he answers Carlos Alcaraz question

“I hope Alcaraz doesn’t change it, because he’s one of the best in the world, but one has to accept the challenge. One has to accept that what one is doing in life will entail a series of sacrifices.

“I’m not talking about sacrifices because I understand that sacrifice is what you do for others. When you do it for yourself, it’s the price you have to pay.

“Alcaraz, being a great tennis player, also pays a price, it’s true. But on the other hand, he earns much more money than the vast majority of young people his age, has much greater social recognition, and has experiences that few others have… If it’s not worth it, it’s better to make a decision.”

Toni Nadal coached Rafael Nadal from the age of four until the end of the 2017 season, when Nadal was 31.

The Mallorcan coach helped Nadal win 75 of his 92 ATP singles titles and 16 of his 22 Grand Slams during their partnership.
