Karolina Muchova dismantled Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-2 with a very inspired United Cup performance to give the Czech Republic an early 1-0 lead in their quarterfinal tie in Sydney.
On paper, it looked like a match that would probably feature a tight battle and likely go to the distance.
But with the way the 22nd-ranked Czech played, the 2024 French Open and Wimbledon runner-up stood no chance.
From the baseline, Muchova dictated play and she also had a great serving day, firing 10 aces.

Even when Paolini had her chances, the 2023 French Open finalist didn’t allow her to convert any as the Czech saved 10-of-10 of break points she faced.
While the fourth-ranked Italian was struggling to realize any of her break point chances, the former world No. 8 converted 5-of-9 of her break point opportunities.
Muchova now has a 5-0 head-to-head against Paolini.
Now, Tomas Machac has a chance to seal the victory for the Czech Republic by beating Flavio Cobolli in the following match.
What Muchova said after beating Paolini?
The 28-year-old may have dismantled the Italian tennis star but she insisted it was a tough match and had nothing but praise for the player who was one of the best stories of the 2024 season.
“I really wanted to bring a point to the team. I tried to stay focused. Jasmine is an unbelievable player. It was a really tough match. I knew I had to go until the end. She had many break points. I think I served well. I’m really happy I made it,” the Czech said.
So far, Muchova is 2-1 at the United Cup – she beat Malene Helgo in her opening match before losing to Iga Swiatek on Wednesday.
If there is a deciding mixed doubles tie against Italy, she will very likely return to the court.
