The field also includes 18 of the best 50 players in the world, starting with number 3, the Californian Xander Schauffele (gold medalist at the Tokyo Games), who is called upon to find his best form after a rib injury that kept him off the green for two months. Among the big names, there are also Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland, Sepp Straka, Shane Lowry and Billy Horschel. The spotlight will also be on Sahith Theegala, Thomas Detry, Corey Conners, Michael Kim and Lucas Glover. Past winners of the competition, which will have a prize pool of $8,700,000, of which $1,566,000 will go to the winner, include Gary Woodland (2011), Luke Donald (2012), captain of Team Europe at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage, Jordan Spieth (2015), Adam Hadwin (2017), Sam Burns (2021 and 2022) and Taylor Moore (2023). For the first time since 2018, Australian Adam Scott will return to play the PGA Tour event. The Valspar Championship precedes the Texas Children’s Houston Open (March 27-30).
Matteo Manassero (Negrar di Valpolicella, 19 April 1993) is an Italian golfer. He holds the records for the youngest winner of the European Tour and, since 2013, the youngest winner of the BMW PGA Championship.
Born in Negrar di Valpolicella, in the province of Verona, on 19 April 1993, he began playing golf at the age of 3 and a half[2] at the Golf Club Villafranca. In 1998 he moved to the Gardagolf Country Club in Soiano del Lago (BS) coached by Franco Maestroni; one of the first to notice him and talk about him was the television journalist Germano Mosconi.
In 2009, at just 16 years old, he won the British Amateur Championship[4], one of the two Majors for amateurs. With this victory Matteo set the record for the youngest winner of the tournament and the first Italian, guaranteeing himself an invitation to two Majors: the Open Championship and The Masters.
