Venus Williams will NOT play Indian Wells despite wildcard offer

Tennis fans were thrilled last week when news broke that Venus Williams had received a wildcard for the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. However, in an unexpected twist, the 44-year-old legend has now declined the invitation, leaving her competitive future uncertain.

Venus Williams

Although Williams remains an officially active WTA player, she hasn’t competed since last year’s Sunshine Swing. The initial announcement of her return was met with great excitement, but it turns out the seven-time Grand Slam champion is not yet ready to rejoin the tour.

BNP Paribas Open tournament director Tommy Haas addressed the situation in a statement:

Our team has been informed that Venus is not accepting the wildcard this year. We wish Venus all the best and hope to see her back in Indian Wells in the future.

The clarification comes after Williams herself contradicted the news during an appearance on the Tennis Weekly Podcast. When asked about her participation in Indian Wells, she surprised fans by stating:

I’m not playing – I’m going to be overseas. I’m not going to be here.

This statement puzzled many, given the prior confirmation of her wildcard. Meanwhile, Williams has recently been spotted in Italy alongside Andrea Preti, further fueling speculation about her current focus.
