What can Nick Kyrgios do in 2025? Experts reflect on his chances

Nick Kyrgios is preparing to return to the ATP tour after almost two years of absence. The Australian ace has had many injuries from the beginning of 2023 until today, which have prevented him from playing and finally trying to win a prestigious title.

The talent from Canberra has confided several times that he would like to win a Grand Slam title before retiring, a feat he came very close to in 2022 by reaching the final at the Wimbledon Championships (lost in four sets to a legend like Novak Djokovic). It will not be easy even for an extremely talented player like Kyrgios to return to the highest level, considering that he has not played an official tournament for a very long time and that the hierarchies of the men’s tour have radically changed in the last year.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championships finalist will have to defeat Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz if he wants to win a Major title, not forgetting Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev. Nick has chosen the Brisbane International as his first official tournament in 2025, in which he will play both singles and doubles alongside Nole Djokovic.

The Australian champion will then move to Melbourne Park, where he will be able to count on the support of his fans at the Australian Open. Kyrgios could get excited in that atmosphere and – if he manages to play his best tennis – he could be a very dangerous opponent for anyone.

Kyrgios is ready

During a recent interview with Eurosport, ATP legend Mats Wilander discussed Kyrgios’ chances in 2025: “I think Nick has revolutionized the sport in many ways. Players are actually using part of his arsenal or his repertoire.

Now, here’s another statement, if Nick goes out, and he plays his absolute best tennis, and if he wins the Grand Slam, I believe maybe for the first time ever, a single player would have ticked every single box that you can tick.

He is competitive, the level is high, the mental attitude is brilliant, the repertoire and the variety of crazy shot-making and the jokes he cracks, no one has ever done it all. Nick Kyrgios has a chance to do it all.”

In recent months, the Australian player has been the center of attention mainly because of his fierce criticism of Sinner. The world number 1 was found positive twice for Clostebol in March, but he managed to prove that his contamination was totally unintentional and was acquitted by ITIA.

However, WADA has decided to appeal against the acquittal sentence and the new trial before the CAS in Lausanne will take place in the first part of 2025. Nick has said several times that he does not believe the Italian champion’s version of events and has attacked him many times, even in a brutal way. Recently, Kyrgios revealed that he would love to face Jannik at the 2025 Australian Open and that he would use any means possible to be able to defeat him.

Nick is exaggerating

According to many fans and insiders, Nick is exaggerating with his provocations and should have a different behavior in this situation.

In an interview with Eurosport, former ATP ace Nicolas Mahut took a shot at Kyrgios: “I don’t like these statements. He is entitled to give his opinion on Sinner’s positive test, everyone is free to think what they want. But to poison the situation like that… Sinner has never disrespected anyone, he is the No 1 in the world. So it’s not necessary.”

The French also added: “In any case, when Kyrgios plays in Australia, the crowd has always been a little on the edge for years. We saw it in particular in doubles with Thanasi Kokkinakis where the crowd had gone to the other side of the barrier.

If he were to play Kyrgios, I think it is more the pre-match climate that would be difficult to manage than the match itself for Sinner.”

Despite his ups and downs, the talent from Canberra is a very important player for the ATP tour. Nick’s game is different from that of other players and he is able to play spectacular shots in every area of the court. The Australian seemed to have finally put all the pieces of the puzzle in place in 2022, when he reached the final in London and achieved several other prestigious results (he defeated Medvedev at the US Open). However – just when his rise seemed to have begun – a new collapse occurred and the behaviors returned to those of the past. Everyone’s hope is that Kyrgios will focus only on tennis and try to become the best version of himself.
