John McEnroe has predicted whether Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner will win as many Grand Slam titles as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer.
Alcaraz, the world No 2, overcame top seed Sinner 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in an astounding 2025 French Open final lasting five hours and 29 minutes.
The 22-year-old Spaniard has now won five Grand Slam titles: two at both the French Open and Wimbledon, and one at the US Open.
Sinner, 23, has secured three majors having triumphed at the last two editions of the Australian Open and last year’s US Open.
With the level from both players remarkably high in what was their first Grand Slam final meeting, many have already labelled the contest as one of the greatest matches in tennis history.
Speaking on TNT Sports, McEnroe made a bold claim about Alcaraz and Sinner’s chances of beating ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal in his prime at Roland Garros.
“You would make a serious argument with both guys that they would be favoured to beat Nadal, at his best,” the seven-time major singles champion said.
“Do I think they’re gonna reach 20, 24 [Grand Slam titles] — either one of them? No, because that plateau is so hard.
“But these two guys right now, it’s like when you watch the NBA and you say nobody could be better than Michael Jordan.
“The tennis level right now is higher than I’ve ever seen.”
Nadal won 14 French Open titles — the all-time record for the most titles won at a single Grand Slam tournament.

Tim Henman, a former world No 4 and six-time Grand Slam semi-finalist, gave his reaction to the final.
“When you’ve got the two top two going head to head, it doesn’t always live up to the hype, but that is one of the best, one of the greatest matches I’ve ever seen,” said the Brit.
“And to have it in a Grand Slam final is something special. Spare a thought for Jannik Sinner. He played some amazing tennis and got oh so close.”
Mark Petchey, a former British No 1 who coaches Emma Raducanu, also weighed in.
“It was just an awesome, awesome display of tennis and athleticism,” Petchey assessed.
“Carlos certainly didn’t invent tennis but he’s perfecting it.
When you frame it in the rivalry he has with Jannik right now, this is the first in the franchise of the big finals these two will play, it bodes so well for the future.
“I can’t speak more highly of Jannik given what he’s just gone through, but the Spanish supernova is something else.”
